MSN Messenger Error Code – 80048820

Unfortunately some of us sometimes have trouble with MSN Messenger but the good news is that all these problems can be solved. One of these errors occurring is 80048820. This error occur when you try to logon.

Cause of 80048820 errors

Here you can find a list of possible causes and all you have to do is to locate cause or causes that make to appear 80048820 errors.

  1. Your system clock may be showing an incorrect time. Wrong time is the most likely cause of 80048820
  2. Incorrect Proxy Setting for Internet Explorer.
  3. You may have a firewall that is blocking connectivity to MSN Messenger.
  4. softpub.dll may have become unregistered.

Fix error code 80048820

The most common source of 80048820 errors is the settings of system clock.

1. Your system clock may be showing an incorrect time. Wrong time is the most likely cause of 80048820

If the source of 80048820 errors is system clock, you should log in as administrator on your computer and set the correcting time and date.

2. Incorrect Proxy Setting for Internet Explorer.

If the source of your 80048820 errors is Proxy setting you should make some changes in your Internet Explorer settings.

The steps for these setting are:

Step 1. Launch Internet Explorer

Step 2. Click Tools

Step 3. Click Internet Options

Step 4. Click on Connections tab

Step 5. Click LAN Setting

Step 6. Uncheck “Use a proxy server for your LAN”

Step 7. You can choose another setting for your Internet connection and this is: ‘Automatically detect settings’.


3. You may have a firewall that is blocking connectivity to MSN Messenger.

If the error 80048820 appears because you have problem with your firewall, to fix the error turn off the firewall temporarily.

Check firewall settings such as Norton: “Block access to secure sites”. If this cures the problem, make sure that Microsoft’s MSN Messenger is allowed full access through your firewall.

For NetGear
a) Enter IP address 192.168.0.1 in the IE address bar.
b) Log on with ISP user name and password.
c) Enter Admin, password
d) Navigate to advanced menu, WAN set-up
e) Change MTU size to 1400

4. softpub.dll may have become unregistered.

If no one of the solutions above does not make your messenger to work, the only solution left is to restart MSN Messenger

Step 1. Click Start button

Step 2. Click on Run

Step3. Type regsvr32 softpub.dll

Step 4. And then restart MSN Messenger.
