Back up for a Windows Vista-based computer

In this article I explain how you can make a back up for your documents and settings on Windows Vista. A back up is a solution to be saved in a case that you have some problems with your computer, and a backup is…free.

It’s recommended to make a back up on an external hard disks, DVDs, CDs, USB memory cards, or to a network location.

Always store the media that you use for backups in a secure location to prevent unauthorized access to your files.

Windows Easy Transfer enables you to back up all user account files and settings, and then restore those accounts and all the users’ files and settings to the new computer. To start Windows Easy Transfer, follow these steps:

Step 1: Go to Start, type transfer in the Start Search box, and then click Windows Easy Transfer in the Programs list;

Step 2: Click Next. If you are prompted to close programs, make sure that you have saved any open documents, and then click Close All;

Step 3: Click Start a new Transfer;

Step 4: Click My old Computer;

Step 5: Click Use a CD, DVD or other removable media;

Step 6: Select how you want to transfer your files;

Step 7: Select the location, set a password if you want, and then click Next;

Step 8: Select what you want to transfer;

Step 9: Review the files to transfer, and then click Next or Transfer;

Step 10: Follow the instructions to transfer your files and settings;

Use Windows Vista Backup and Restore Center

Next I explain how you can back up your current data as a safety precaution, and for this you can use Windows Vista Backup and Restore Center. The back up data can be restored only on a Windows Vista computer.

Step 1: Go to Start, type backup in the Start Search box, and then click Backup and Restore in the Programs list;

Step 2: Click Back up files under Back up files or your entire computer;

Step 3: Select where you want to store the file backup, and then click Next;

Step 4: Select the disk or disks that you want to back up, and then click Next;

Step 5: Select the file type or file types that you want to back up, and then click Next;

Step 6: Click Save Settings, and then start the backup;

Step 7: Your backup will be saved to the selected backup location;

How to make a manually copy

How you can manually copy the data to a network location or removable media such as a removable hard disk drive, CD, DVD, or a USB memory card, follow these steps:

Step 1: Click Start, click Computer, and then double-click the drive that you currently have Windows Vista installed on;

Step 2: Open the Users folder, and then open the user folder from which you want to back up the files;

Step 3: Copy the necessary folders from the user folder to a network location or to removable media, and to back up data for all users, repeat steps 2 through 3.

Info: To determine the size of all the files in the user folder, select all the folders, right-click those selected folders, and then click Properties.
