The error 0×80070490 may appear when you try to connect on Windows Update Web site or to the Microsoft Update Web site. This issue may occur if there is corruption in the Component Based Servicing (CBS) manifest.

To fix this error you should verify with System File Checker that the correct versions of the system files are present.

Step 1: Go to Start -> and click Run;

Step 2: Type cmd and then press ENTER;

Step 3: At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER;

Step 4: After the System File Checker has finished, try to install updates again;

In the case that the System File Checker does not resolve the issue, you must perform a repair installation of Windows XP.

Fix error 0×80070490 in Windows Vista

Step 1: First you should restart your computer;

Step 2: Insert the Windows Vista DVD;

Step 3: In the Setup window, click Install Now;

Step 4: Click Go online to obtain the latest updates for installation (recommended);

Step 5: Type the CD key if you are prompted to do this;

Step 6: Click Yes to accept the Microsoft Software License Terms;

Step 7: On the Which kind of installation do you want? screen, click Upgrade;

Step 8: When the installation is complete, restart your computer, and then try to install the updates;
