The error 0×80070490 may appear when you try to connect on Windows Update Web site or to the Microsoft Update Web site. This issue may occur if there is corruption in the Component Based Servicing (CBS) manifest.

Fix error 0×80070490 in Windows XP

To fix this error you should verify with System File Checker that the correct versions of the system files are present.

Step 1: Go to Start -> and click Run;

Step 2: Type cmd and then press ENTER;

Step 3: At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER;

Step 4: After the System File Checker has finished, try to install updates again;

In the case that the System File Checker does not resolve the issue, you must perform a repair installation of Windows XP.

I write an article about how you can perform a clean boot in Windows XP, and now I will write this article to show how you can perform a clean boot for Windows 7 and also Windows Vista.

You can apply for your computer a clean boot when appear error messages or you have other issues on your computer. To solve these issues, you can make a clean boot, and afterthat to fix the problems. When you make a clean boot, you start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, and these can help to eliminate software conflicts.

It’s true that when you start your computer in a clean boot, you can lose some functionality of your computer. When you start the computer as usual, the functionality returns.

Step 1: Perform a clean boot

A. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights;

B. Go to Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER;

C. The System Configuration Utility should be started;

D. Go to General tab and click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box;

E. Go to Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all;

F. Click OK, and then click Restart;

Step 2: Enable half of the services

A. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights;

B. Go to Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER;

C. Go to Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box;

D. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list;

E. Click OK, and then click Restart;

Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns

It’s possible that the problems still occurs, and you should repeat step 1 and also step 2, with a little difference for step 2. In step 2 you should click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Service list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.

Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items

A. Repeat here Step 1: Perform a clean boot;

B. Go to Startup tab, and then click to select half of the check boxes in the Startup Item list;

C. Click OK, and then click Restart;
