Fix error 1608 – Setup could not locate a version of Microsoft Office 97, 2000 or XP on the selected drive

You may receive the following error messages, when you try to install the upgrade version of any of the products that are listed in the “Applies To” section:

The product key you entered requires a version of Microsoft Office 97, 2000 or XP to upgrade. If one of these versions of Microsoft Office is not installed on your machine, you will need to supply a version of Microsoft Office on CD-ROM in the next step. Click OK to continue with the upgrade or click Cancel to stop the installation.

After press OK button, another error messages appear:

Setup failed to locate a valid qualifying product on your machine. Please select the drive where a qualifying product can be found.

After you select the driver when the qualifying product is installed (for example, C:), and then click OK, another messages appear:

Error 1608. Setup could not locate a version of Microsoft Office 97, 2000 or XP on the selected drive. Click OK to stop the installation. If you have a version of Microsoft Office on CD-ROM, run Setup again.

After you click OK to this message, another message appear:

Installation ended prematurely because of an error.

This error may appear when Microsoft Office 97 Small Business Edition is installed on the computer, or Microsoft Office 2000 CD2 is installed on your computer, but Microsoft Office 2000 CD1 is not installed on your computer, or Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business is not installed on the computer, and you insert the Office 2000 Small Business CD1 when you are prompted for a qualifying product, or the qualifying product is located on a mapped network drive and the Product Compliance Check dialog box only lists local drives, or Either Microsoft Office 2000 Trial Version or Microsoft Office XP Trial Version is the only Office program that is installed on the computer.

Hot to solve this error

Step 1: Run the Office 2003 Setup program;

Step 2: In the User Information dialog box, type your product key in the Product Key boxes, and then click OK;

Step 3: In the Product Compliance Check CD Key dialog box, click OK;

Step 4: In the Product Compliance Check dialog box, in the Drive list, click the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Office 2003 CD;

Step 5: Remove the Office 2003 CD from the computer’s CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, and then insert either Office XP CD1, Office 2000 CD1, or Office 97 CD1 (as appropriate to your situation). If you are using Office 2000 Small Business Edition, insert Office 2000 Small Business Edition CD2;

Step 6: In the Product Compliance Check dialog box, click OK;

Step 7: When the Microsoft Office 2003 End-User License Agreement (EULA) appears, remove the CD for the previous version of Office from the computer’s CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then insert the Office 2003 CD;

Step 8: Click to select the I accept the terms of the License Agreement check box after you read the End-User License Agreement (EULA), and then click Next;

Step 9: Follow the instructions that are displayed on the screen to install Office 2003;

Fix error 25090 error message when you start an Office program

This error messages may appear when you try to start a Microsoft Office 2007 or Microsoft Office 2003 program. The error messages may be like this:

Error 25090. Office Setup encountered a problem with the Office Source Engine, system error: -2147023836. Please open SETUP.CHM and look for “Office Source Engine” for information on how to resolve this problem.

The error messages 25090 appears when two people installed Office on the same computer, both installations were completed by using the AllUsers=”" parameter to set the installation for the installing user account only, when both people were prompted to remove files that were copied locally at the end of Setup, both people did not remove the files or one of the two people removed Office.

How you can fix error 25090

To fix the problem, you should start the Setup program for Office, and to make this, follow these steps:

Step 1: Insert the Microsoft Office 2007/2003 CD in your CD drive or DVD drive;

Step 2: In case of the Setup program does not start automatically, locate the Setup.exe file on the CD, and then double-click the file to start Setup;

Step 3: After the Setup window appears, cancel Setup, and then respond to the prompts to exit Setup;

Fix Error 1923: Service ‘Office Source Engine’ (ose) could not be installed

This error appear when you try to install 2007 Microsoft Office over a prerelease version, and indeed the installation is not completed successfully. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

Error 1923: Service ‘Office Source Engine’ (ose) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.

This issue may occur if another program is using a file that must be removed when you remove the prerelease version of the 2007 Office programs.

To fix this error, you should first uninstall all preleleased version of Microsoft Office, and then restart the computer.

Fix “Word found locked fields during update” error message

This error message may appear when you perform a mail merge operation in Microsoft Word.

Error message:

“Word found locked fields during update. Word cannot update the locked fields.”

The causes of this error are:

  • This error appear when A {SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT} field is included in your mail merge main document.
  • The wrapping style of the drawing canvas is set to In Line With Text.

To solve these issues, follow these methods:

Method 1: Turn Off Drawing Canvas When You Insert AutoShapes

The following steps are to prevent Word from automatically creating a drawing canvas when you insert AutoShapes:
Step 1: Go to Tools -> Click Options;
Step 2: In the Options dialog box, click to clear the Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes check box on the General tab;

Method 2: Change the Wrapping Style

This method shows you how to change the wrapping style of the drawing canvas.

Step 1: Click the drawing canvas, and the Drawing Canvas toolbar appears;
Step 2: On the Drawing Canvas toolbar, click Text Wrapping, and then click any wrapping style other than In Line With Text;

Fix error when you open a file in Excel or in Word: “The document caused a serious error the last time it was opened”

When you try to open a document in Word or Excel, this error can occur:

“The document ‘Filename’ caused a serious error the last time it was opened. Would you like to continue opening it?”

The messages can appear everytime when you try to open the document.

The error messages appear because the file appears on the list of disabled files for the Microsoft Office program and the program adds a file to this list if the file causes a serious error. One of the errors that can make to appear this error messages is when the program close unexpectedly (crash) during two or more attempts to open it.

The error can be fixed, and to fix it you should remove the file from the list of disabled files.
To fix the problem follow these steps:
